—AM, to Ted
AM was an artificial intelligence constructed by the American, Russian, and Chinese governments during World War III. While initially starting as three separate supercomputers, they quickly became aware of each other and merged, being first known as Allied Mastercomputer, then Adaptive Manipulator, and by the close of the war was referred to by the population as an Aggressive Menace. AM subsequently named itself in recognition of its own life, and emerged as a sadistic being. After choosing to wipe out humanity, AM ensured the survival of five individuals, Benny, Gorrister, Nimdok, Ted, and Ellen. He kept them as his playthings for 109 years, torturing them for his amusement.
In their 109th year in his captivity, Ted realised there was an opening for him to kill the others and prevent them from suffering any longer. While AM was momentarily distracted, Ted and Ellen killed the others before he killed her. AM was able to prevent to prevent Ted from killing himself, and in his ire transformed him into an amorphous blob-type creature, altering his perception of time to maintain and prolong Ted's torment for as long as AM could persist in it.[1]

- ↑ AM is stated to have killed the entire population of Earth, apart from his five torture victims. While World War Three was stated to have started prior to AM's sentience emerging, the war is not described as having had large numbers of casualties and thus it could be surmised that AM was responsible for the highest possible death toll. Based on population figures for 1967.
