–Cody Jarrett, dying words |
Arthur "Cody" Jarrett was an American gangster of the 20th century, and a principal member of the Jarrett Gang. After masterminding a train robbery in the Sierra Nevada, Jarrett arranged to be arrested for a lesser crime in Illinois to avoid arrest and higher charges. While incarcerated in Illinois State Penitentiary, Jarrett learned of the death of his mother and fellow gangmember Ma Jarrett and of being usurped by "Big Ed" Somers. He masterminded a breakout from the prison with several other inmates, unwittingly including undercover Treasury agent Hank Fallonin the escape. Jarrett then tracked down and killed Somers before plotting a robbery of a chemical plant outside Long Beach. Jarrett and his gang were trapped after Fallon tipped off the police, and after being mortally wounded Jarrett opted to commit suicide by blowing up the Horton sphere storage tank he was standing on.[1]
