—Darth Vader
Anakin[1] Skywalker[2] was a Jedi Knight. Following the Clone Wars, Skywalker had a falling out with Obi-Wan Kenobi, which led to him becoming a cyborg and taking the name Darth Vader. He served as the Emperor's enforcer, overseeing the deployment of the Death Star alongside Grand Moff Tarkin.
Biography[]
Jedi training[]
Obi-Wan Kenobi, having discovered Skywalker as being an excellent pilot and already possessed of deep Force ability, took it upon himself to train Skywalker as a Jedi Knight.[1] While Kenobi's master, Yoda detected a great deal of anger in him,[3] Kenobi believed himself an equally skilled teacher; as a result,[1] Vader was seduced by the dark side of the Force and began a campaign of extermination against the Jedi under the orders of the Empire.[2] A confrontation between Kenobi and Vader ensued, resulting in Vader's near death in a volcanic pit, necessitating a suit that would function as life support.[4]

Notes[]
Behind the Scenes[]
- Skywalker was portrayed as Darth Vader by English actor David Prowse and voiced by an uncredited James Earl Jones in the three Star Wars films,[5][6][7][8][9] and was portrayed unmasked by Sebastian Shaw in the final film.[10] Jones was not the first choice to be Vader's voice; George Lucas had been dissatisfied with Prowse's accent and chose Jones to dub the character. Jones chose to remain uncredited for the first two films.[11]
- Heat and sweat generated from wearing the 40 pound leather suit would obscure the eye lenses of the mask, leading to reduced visibility for Prowse.[12]
Trivia[]
- Lucas had also considered Orson Welles to voice the role.[13]
- Vader has been featured twice on the web series "DEATH BATTLE!".[14][15]
