Dirk Pitt, Sr. was an American Vietnam War hero and Air Force pilot who was loaned to the National Underwater and Marine Agency. Pitt embarked on numerous nautical adventures alongside Al Giordino.

Notes[]

Behind the Scenes[]

  • Pitt was created by American author Clive Cussler.[1][2]
  • Cussler had been working as a copywriter at the time and sought something more fulfilling, and decided to write a paperback series. He studied Edgar Allan Poe's Dupin series, Arthur Conan Doyle's Sherlock Holmes, John D. McDonald's Travis McGee, Ian Fleming's James Bond, and Mickey Spillane's Mike Hammer. Cussler decided to set his character in watery settings to make him more unique.[3]
  • Cussler would have preferred Hugh Jackman to play Pitt over Matthew McConaughey.[3]
