The Earthship Ark was an interstellar ark containing the last vestiges of the human race. Originally launched in the 23rd century AD, an accident in the 24th led to its near destruction in the 28th century.
History[]
Construction, launch, and post-launch[]
23rd Century[]
In the year 2285, a galactic calamity threatened all life on Earth with extinction. With riots going on in the streets, the Committee of Scientists and Philosophers began selecting elements of Earth's life that could be preserved, to colonise other planets. The Committee began building the Earthship Ark between the Earth and the Moon. Three million human beings were chosen, to respect chosen segments of the population. The humans were isolated in different biospheres to preserve their unique characteristics. (TV: Voyage of Discovery)
24th Century[]
The ship was launched, with the programmed objective of finding a Class G star. The ship traveled for 100 years before the first difficulty arose. An accident in 2385 led to the ship locking on to an unidentified Class G star, set into a collision course. (TV: Voyage of Discovery)
AD 2790[]
After committing a cardinal sin in his community by repeatedly questioning and flouting the will of the Elders of Cypress Corners, Devon was forced to leave his home behind. He accidentally made his way to the Sphere Projector room, and encountered the ship's AI, Mu Lambda 165. It explained to him the events of the last 505 years in light detail. (TV: Voyage of Discovery)
Notes[]
- Visual effects supervisor had intended to show the protagonists travels through the Ark with a newly invented filming method referred to as Magicam. The process was not ready in time and the bluescreen method was used instead.[1]
- Author Petter Ogland compared the Dorcon battleship from the "Space: 1999" episode "The Dorcons" to the Earthship Ark.[2]
