Edmond Dantès was a French sailor of the early 19th century who was falsely convicted for treason under suspicion of being affiliated with Napoleon Bonaparte. After escaping from the Château d'If, Dantès pilfered buried treasure from the island of Monte Cristo in a bid to take revenge against his enemies.
