The Eighth Doctor was the eighth incarnation of the Time Lord known as the Doctor.
After the presumed execution of the Master by the Daleks, the Doctor's seventh incarnation attempted to bring his mortal enemy's remains back to Gallifrey. The still-living Master attacked the TARDIS and forced the Doctor to land in San Francisco, 1999. After being injured by gangland violence he was taken to a hospital and operated on by Doctor Grace Holloway, who, not expecting extra-terrestrial biology, unwittingly killed him. A painful regeneration ensued in the hospital morgue, and the Doctor's latest incarnation was born.
After the start of the Last Great Time War, the Doctor was killed during a crashlanding on Karn. Revived by Ohila of the Sisterhood of Karn and dismayed by the state of the universe, he took the chance to regenerate into his next incarnation- a warrior that could fight the time war.

Behind the Scenes[]
- The Eighth Doctor was portrayed by English actor Paul McGann.[1][2] After receiving an invitation to audition for the part, he was surprised, having expected Rowan Atkinson to get the part.[3]
- McGann originally envisioned a different outfit and appearance for the character, that was vetoed by producers who were afraid that fans would never accept it.[4] In 2010, while creating a new appearance for the character's appearances in Big Finish audio dramas, chose a Victorian-era navy- style pea coat to honour his sailor ancestors.[5]
