“ | My God is terror. My God is death. Taking my family from me like He did. Taking yours too. He strikes us down, like weeds under a scythe, and yet still, you kneel and thank Him. | ” |
–Eli Voss, Cuauhtémoc, Chihuahua, Mexico, 2017 |
Eli Voss was a Mexican-born Mennonite gangster of the early 21st century. As the front-facing leader of the Mennonite Mob, Voss led a reign of terror across three countries. He trafficked cocaine from Mexico through the United States and into Canada, all while being unable to be caught by the Federal Police and the Drug Enforcement Administration. His death in 2017 came at the hands of Antioch pastor Noah Funk, whom he had unsuccessfully attempted to force to serve as his agent in Canada.
Biography[]
Family Life[]
Loss of Faith[]
On a Sunday, while heading to church with his family, their cart was struck by a drunk driver. The driver sped away, leaving Voss' wife and ten children to die of their injuries. This caused him to renounce God. (TV: Baptism)
Life of Crime[]
Death[]
Funk cornered Voss in his dining room, holding him at gunpoint. Voss chose to let Janzen move away from him, and drew his own pistol when Funk made no move to fire. Both men lowered their guns, as Voss knew Funk wouldn't fire on an unarmed man. Voss then attempted to shoot Janzen, forcing Funk to shoot Voss to spare the boy's life. Funk rushed over to the dying man, attempting to accept God into his heart before death, but Voss refused, silently smearing his blood on Funk's face before dying in the pastor's arms. (TV: Baptism)
Legacy[]
Voss' death at Funk's hands caused a crisis of faith in the latter; he abandoned the Mennonite religion as a result. (TV: Baptism, Excommunication)
Weapons and Abilities[]
Assets[]
- Informants: Voss had informants within both the Drug Enforcement Administration and the rural Antioch Police Department. (TV: Funeral, Communion)
Skills[]
- Knife-Wielding: With two strokes of his skinning knife, Voss could eviscerate his victims. (TV: Ordination)
- Stealth: Voss was stealthy enough to escape an armed police ambush on Gerry Epp's farmhouse without detection. (TV: Ordination)
Personality[]
Voss was a humourless, unhappy man. The death of his entire family steered him towards a life of crime, and he became a proficient and ruthless killer as a result. When he wanted to send a message, he would carve a large V into those he murdered.
Notes[]
Behind the Scenes[]
- Voss was portrayed by Canadian actor Peter Outerbridge.[1][2]
- Greg David, writing for TV, eh? stated "Hats off to Peter Outerbridge for his performance; Eli is a cold-blooded character I can’t help but love seeing on screen. He’s alway bad news, but he’s been fun to watch. Last week I highlighted a scene between Noah and Eli as the best of the season. I was wrong; their scene this week is better."[3]
