“ | Have you ever thought what it's like to be wanderers in the Fourth Dimension? Have you? To be exiles? Susan and I are cut off from our own planet - without friends or protection. But one day we shall get back. Yes, one day. | ” |
–The First Doctor |
The First Doctor was the original incarnation of the Time Lord known as the Doctor. Originally a curmudgeonly, antisocial hermit hiding from his homeworld of Gallifrey, before adventures with his granddaughter Susan, and her teachers Ian and Barbara led to him becoming a more outgoing person, and more concerned with righting wrongs.
This incarnation of the Doctor was the first to encounter the Daleks and the Cybermen. At the culmination of his first encounter with the Cybermen, the Doctor's body, aged and worn out, could no longer sustain him. The Doctor collapsed, and regenerated into his second incarnation.

- While being interrogated by the Morok Governor of Xeros Lobos, the Doctor was able to outwit the telepathic device he was trapped in by projecting mental images contrary to Lobos' demands. (TV: The Dimensions of Time)
- Agility: While the Doctor's form was weak and would be perceived as feeble at the close of his life, the Doctor was able to surprise and knock Dako unconscious, and swiftly tied him up, before hiding himself in an empty Dalek casing. (TV: The Dimensions of Time)
Notes[]
Behind the Scenes[]
- The First Doctor was played by English actor William Hartnell.[1][2]
Reception[]
- Eighth Doctor portrayer Paul McGann recalled discussing Hartnell's performance and "Doctor Who" on the playground fondly. McGann stated of Hartnell, "At that time, we still had people from the Victorian era around - my own grandparents were Victorian. He was emblematic, a serious person that you could look up to, and he had a family!"[3]
