George Perry Floyd Jr. (14 October 1973 – 25 May 2020) was an African American former truck driver and bouncer who was murdered during an arrest by officers of the Minneapolis Police Department. The police had been phoned after it was alleged that Floyd had attempted to pass counterfeit currency at a corner store. Derek Chauvin, one of the four police officers who arrived on the scene, knelt on Floyd's neck and back for 9 minutes and 29 seconds. The circulation of the footage of Floyd's arrest and death prompted a massive public backlash, with a great deal of the ire being directed toward the concept of policing itself, and resulted in massive protests held nationally and world wide.

Chauvin was convicted of murder and manslaughter on 20 April 2021.[1][2][3]
