—Captain John Mason, to Stanley Goodspeed
Captain John Patrick Mason was a Scottish SAS agent and operative of British intelligence of the 20th century, known as a decades-long political prisoner of the United States government and for frequent successful escape attempts.
In 1962, Mason was sent on a mission to obtain American government secrets held by J. Edgar Hoover's Federal Bureau of Investigation. After concealing microfilm detailing the existence of extraterrestrials and plans by the conspirators behind the JFK assassination in Fort Walton, Kansas, Mason attempted to escape to Canada but was captured and held at Alcatraz Federal Penitentiary. Mason knew that if he gave up the location of the information that they would kill him to ensure his silence. He subsequently escaped from Alcatraz the following year.
He was then recaptured and incarcerated in San Quentin State Prison, from which he would later escape and father a daughter, Jade Angelou. In 1976, he was transferred to Wolfburg Federal Penitentiary, where he would remain for nearly two decades. In 1995, his expertise in escaping Alcatraz was needed for a mission to infiltrate and liberate the former prison from Brigadier General Francis X. Hummel and several United States Marines under his command. After surviving the Shower Massacre, Mason and FBI chemical weapons specialist Stanley Goodspeed were able to defuse three rockets that had been aimed at San Francisco. After gaining Goodspeed's respect, the latter faked Mason's death, giving the former spy his freedom. In exchange, he informed Goodspeed of the location of the classified microfilm.[1]
Notes[]
Behind the Scenes[]
- Mason was portrayed by Scottish actor Sean Connery.[2][3] Bay considered a sequel to the film in which Mason would assist Goodspeed while the pair were on the run from the US government, but it ultimately did not come to pass.[4]
- Fan theories exist that suggest Mason is the same character as James Bond.[5]
