John Quincy Adams (11 July 1767 – 23 February 1848) was an American statesman, diplomat, and lawyer who served as the sixth president of the United States from 4 March 1825 – 4 March 1829.
The 1824 Presidential election was contested by Adams, Andrew Jackson, William H. Crawford, and Henry Clay, all members of the Democratic-Republican Party. As no candidate won the electoral vote, the House of Representatives held a contingent election, which Adams won through the assistance of Clay, which would later be labelled a corrupt bargain by Jackson.
