The Joker was an unidentified American master criminal of the late 20th and early 21st century.
Despite his death, his legacy lived on in Gotham's underworld and in Drake. Decades later, the Jokerz gang numbered in the thousands, and the stolen microchip implanted into Drake's body allowed for a new Joker to rise and decimate Neo-Gotham.
Notes[]
Behind the Scenes[]
- The Joker was played by American actor Mark Hamill.
- English actor Tim Curry was originally cast in the part, and spent time recording lines. He at one point came down with bronchitis, and was fired as a result. Hamill was then hired.[1] Casting director Andrea Romano recalled that a new producer had come onto the production and disliked Curry's performance, demanding that he be replaced. Hamill's agent had already reached out, and after a successful audition the actor needed to ADR six to seven episodes of dialogue.[2][3] Hamill had some confidence during his audition, noting the outcry over the casting of Michael Keaton as Batman, giving him the impression that he would never be cast. His confidence in his own inevitable failure let him relax during the audition.[4][5] Hamill intentionally incorporated variations of the character's laugh, saying "I thought, you know, I could use this laugh almost as a vocabulary. Instead of having it be one continuous laugh, I could use it like color on a canvas. There could be sinister laughs, there could be joyful, gleeful, maniacal laughs, there could be malevolent and evil laughs. There are so many different colors that you can give him, so that kids will have more than one laugh to mimic on the playground. I do have to thank the people at Batman, because this work opened up an entire new career for me."[6]
- Hamill loved playing the role, as it lay on the other side of the spectrum from a character like Luke Skywalker,[7] going so far as to say the role was among his favourite characters to play.[4]
Reception[]
- Hamill's performance as the DCAU version of the Joker has been noted as both "the most iconic animated version of the character but one of the most well-known across any medium."[8]
Trivia[]
- Footage of Curry's vocal performance surfaced in 2022.[9]
