Justin Pierre James Trudeau PC MP (b. 25 December 1971) is the current Prime Minister of Canada. He was first elected to that office in 2015. He is the 23rd to hold the office. He is the son of Pierre Elliott Trudeau, who was the 15th Prime Minister of Canada.
Trudeau was elected as a member of the Liberal Party in 2008.[1] After initially dismissing running for the leadership, Trudeau won the 2013 Liberal Party of Canada leadership election,[2] succeeding Michael Ignatieff and interim leader Bob Rae.[3][4] Trudeau went on to defeat incumpent Prime Minister Stephen Harper in the 2015 general election.[5][6]
Trudeau's government has legalised recreational marijuana, and has sought both electoral and environmental reform. Trudeau was awarded National Geographic's Planetary Leadership Award for his government's efforts and initiatives to protect the environment.[7] He was also named as one of the Time 100 in 2016 and 2018.[8][9][10]
Trudeau's time in office has been tinged with scandal; with the SNC-Lavalin affair in 2019, and the WE Charity scandal in 2020. Trudeau's reputation has also been impacted by the revelation that he had worn blackface on multiple occasions in his youth.
