It is better to Rule in Hell, than Serve in Heaven.

Khan Noonien Singh, quoting Milton's Lucifer

Khan Noonien Singh was a genetically engineered human war lord who controlled a large territory during the Eugenics Wars. After the tides of war changed, Khan and the other Augments boarded the colony ship Botany Bay in 1996 and fled into deep space.

In 2267, the Botany Bay was rediscovered by Captain James T. Kirk and the crew of the USS Enterprise. Khan and his surviving followers were awakened from stasis, and nearly succeeded in taking over the ship. Kirk sent Khan and his followers into exile on Ceti Alpha V, leaving them marooned with no chance of escape. Six months after their arrival the planet suffered massive ecological deterioration following an orbital shift. The resulting dramatic upheaval of the biosphere led to the death of 20 of Khan's people.

In 2285, the USS Reliant was dispatched on a mission to Ceti Alpha VI during Project Genesis, and landed on Ceti Alpha V, mistaking it for the former. Khan and his men captured the landing party and used them to hijack the Reliant. Khan was finally killed following the Battle of the Mutara Nebula.
