Leroy Jethro Gibbs was an American military officer who served with both the United States Marine Corps and subsequently with the Naval Criminal Investigative Service's Major Case Response Team.

Gibbs served in both Operations Just Cause and Desert Storm; It was during the latter that he was informed that his wife and daughter had been murdered on the orders of Mexican drug lord Pedro Hernandez. Despite his grief, he opted to stay and fight. He was wounded in combat and received the Purple Heart.

During the recovery process, he snuck into Mexico and assassinated Hernandez, ultimately escaping punishment after the investigating officer closed the case upon learning the circumstances. He was discharged from the Navy in 1992 and elected to join NCIS; he worked for the agency until his decision to retire in 2021 following false accusations of criminality.
