Mary Jeannie May Simon CC CMM COM OQ CD (21 August 1947 in Kangiqsualujjuaq, Nunavik, Northern Quebec) is a Canadian former diplomat and ambassador who has served as Governor General of Canada from 26 July 2021 to the present,[1] and a current fellow with the Arctic Institute of North America. Early in her career, she was a producer and announcer for CBC North, and later entered public service as secretary of the board for the Northern Quebec Inuit Association. Simon was Canada's first Ambassador for Circumpolar Affairs, and was a lead negotiator for the creation of the Arctic Council. She also later served as ambassador to Denmark.
On July 6, 2021, Simon was announced by Prime Minister Justin Trudeau as Canada's 30th Governor General, succeeding Julie Payette, who left the post following claims of toxicity.[2] She was the first Indigenous person to hold the post.[3] Trudeau also announced that his recommendation had been accepted by Queen Elizabeth II.[4]
