“ | My experiments have turned into madness. I've created a monster. | ” |
–Dr. Francis Flegg |
Doctor Maurice Xavier (also known as Eugene Xavier) was an American physician who was tried and executed for the death of a child in starvation-related experiments. Xavier was instead resurrected by Dr. Francis Flegg, who considered the executed criminal to be a martyr of science. Flegg used his newly developed synthetic blood on Xavier; however, Xavier could not biologically synthesise the blood, leading to the pair to venture out and collect Type One blood from unsuspecting victims. Xavier took on the alias Marshall Quesne as a cover for his new life.
Notes[]
Behind the Scenes[]
- Xavier was portrayed by American actor Humphrey Bogart,[1][2] in his sole horror outing. Bogart later complained about having had to perform in the film, stating "This was one of the pictures that made me march into Jack Warner and ask for more money again. You can believe what this one was like. I had a part that somebody like Bela Lugosi or Boris Karloff should have played. I was this doctor, brought back to life, and the only thing that nourished this poor bastard was blood. If it had been Jack Warner's blood, or Harry's or Pop's, I wouldn't have minded as much! The trouble was, they were drinking mine and I was making this stinking movie."[3] YouTuber and horror film enthusiast James Rolfe felt these comments increased Bogart's "awesomeness".[4]
- American author and film historian Scott Allen Nollen felt that Bogart was woefully miscast in the role, drawing comparisons between Xavier and Bogart's character Ed Hatch from the 1938 country musical "Swing Your Lady". Nollen felt that "The Return of Doctor X" was a great deal more watchable.[5]
- While the character was referred to by a tombstone and the end credits of the film as Maurice Xavier, several newspaper clippings in the film refer to the character as "Eugene" Xavier.[6]
