Merrick was a Watcher who lived hundreds of lives training vampire slayers. After beginning the training of Buffy Summers, Merrick was slain by the vampire Lothos.

- Merrick was played by Canadian actor Donald Sutherland.[1][2] Joss Whedon, the film's writer,[3] disliked working with Sutherland, having called him a "prick" with a "bad attitude", and accused him of "destroying" the film by rewriting the character's dialogue.[4] Whedon has also referred to Sutherland as both "a certain OTHER thespian who shall remain hated",[5] and "the big, fat, wannabe movie star".[6]
