“ | We struck a deal. Or rather, he struck an ultimatum. Let him use my living space to talk about horror comics... or my soul would never stop screaming. And so I agreed. And I can't get rid of him. Because despite how he acts; despite how many stories you hear about him; and despite how many insults we throw at each other, the simple truth is that wherever he came from, he is far more powerful and far more dangerous than he appears to be. And you do not upset him, and you certainly don't do anything to his Longbox of the Damned. | ” |
–Linkara, informing Mirror Margaret of Moarte's history with him |
Moarte was a ghoul most well-known for hosting "Longbox of the Damned," an internet review series devoted to horror comics, in the early 21st century.
Biography[]
Encounter with Linkara[]
After Linkara's magical abilities were taken away from him by the spirit inhabiting his magic gun, he set out on a quest to regain his powers. On his journey, he heard rumour of a box containing powerful dark magic. He sought it out but was captured by Moarte. The ghoul threatened to kill him for invading his space, but after learning of the YouTuber's occupation decided to offer him a choice. Linkara accepted the coerced bargain and allowed him to take up some of his living space to talk about horror comics.[1] (SKETCH: Spider-Man: Funeral For An Octopus)
Personality[]
Moarte is strictly devoted to spreading his gospel about horror comics; he cares little about what transpires that does not hamper his ability to talk about them.[2]
Weapons and Abilities[]
Supernatural Abilities[]
- Spirit Attraction: Moarte's mere continued presence in a location warps the area and causes spirits to home in on the location.[3]
- Reality Warping: Moarte's sheer mystical power allows participants in magical mental warfare to interact with him in the real world.[4]
Occult Artifacts[]

Notes[]
Behind the Scenes[]
- Moarte is created and portrayed by American comic book reviewer and internet personality Lewis Lovhaug. The character is among his favourites to portray.[5] As of 2016 the makeup required only about a half hour to apply.[6] While initially uncertain whether he wanted the characters to exist in the same universe,[7] Lovhaug eventually decided to have the characters interact sparingly.[8][9]
- "Moarte" is the Romanian word for "death,"[10] which Lovhaug was conscious of when picking the name.[11] Other inspirations for the character included television horror hosts, the Cryptkeeper, and the lost silent film "London After Midnight".[12] The accent was inspired by impersonations of Bela Lugosi's take on Count Dracula.[13]
- Moarte's backstory with Linkara, revealed for the first time in 2022, was at least conceived of as far back as 2016.[14]

- ↑ Moarte likes promoting horror and monster comics, so Linksano got let off easy. There is a reason Linkara and Moarte tolerate each other, which SHOULD get revealed in the movie (we’re still having script talks about that), but Mirrorkara is just some evil dude who went into his space. Moarte is fully aware of all the shenanigans that happen outside of the supply room… he just doesn’t care. He’s here to talk about horror comics. - Linkara's Tumblr - 4 November 2018 - Tumblr - Retrieved 26 November 2022

- ↑ Thanks to Moarte’s presence in the supply room, raw mystical energy is constantly being thrown around in there. The mental battle was triggered by a spell, so they were able to interact despite Moarte doing his thing in the “real” world. - Linkara's Tumblr - 31 October 2017 - Tumblr - Retrieved 26 November 2022

- ↑ Usually about a half hour to an hour to get the makeup on, since it’s pretty simple. Viga helped out this year (and during the first summer Longbox) with powder and the like to keep it solid so I wouldn’t sweat through it. It usually takes longer to get off, since by that point it’s dried enough that it takes a maximum amount of scrubbing and wiping and scrubbing again to remove it, and even then in spots like my ears I won’t notice for a day or two that there’s still some white in a crevice or something. - Linkara's Tumblr - 10 October 2016 - Retrieved 26 November 2022
- ↑ There are times like these when I think I should make this stuff canon. The only thing is that I haven’t decided yet if Moarte is officially a “part” of the AT4W-verse. - Linkara's Tumblr - 30 October 2012 - Retrieved 26 November 2022
- ↑ Moarte really does work as his own thing not actually interacting with the other AT4W people. It was fine having him interact with Maven of the Eventide in her Monster Mash review because her character is focused on the same things he is, but I think it’s more fun to just have Linkara and Moarte trade jabs from across the shows even though they are literally filmed one room apart from each other. - ↑ As for Moarte doing an episode of AT4W… maybe for a DVD. I prefer keeping them separate but with occasional references to each other. - Linkara's Tumblr - 21 October 2014 - Retrieved 26 November 2022

- ↑ The lost film “London After Midnight” (for the general look - you should spot the inspiration if you search for pics), horror hosts in general, the name was recommended on twitter because it’s the Romanian word for Death, and the Cryptkeeper. - Linkara's Tumblr - 5 October 2013 - Tumblr - Retrieved 26 November 2022
- ↑ Moarte’s look was inspired by photos of Lon Chaney, Sr. in the lost film “London After Midnight.” The accent was just general vaguely-European tones to him you’d hear from a Dracula impersonation or the like. The actual inspiration to do the thing came from Cinemassacre’s Monster Madness. And how do I do it for so many episodes in a row? At the cost of my voice for a few days after.
