You are strangers here! Arrived since I went away. I am known as Nelvana of the Northern Lights! And have just returned from a land far below the ice, to pit my powers against the Yellow Peril.

–Nelvana, to Spud Jodwin and Bill Speers

Nelvana was a demigoddess, daughter of Koliak the Mighty and a mortal woman. Along with her brother Tanero, she embarked on adventures to protect her subjects in the Canadian north. She defended Canada against the efforts of the Axis Powers and extraterrestrial beings, taking the identity of Alana North, secret agent, to operate clandestinely.

Weapons and Abilities[]

Inherent Abilities[]

  • Light Blasts: Nelvana was able to use blasts of light akin to lightning strikes, that were potent enough to leave a mammoth-man charred and dead, or to kill several Manchurian wolves, (COMIC: Tokyo - 3240 MI) or to wound an octopus without harming the man it held in its tentacles, (COMIC: Messenger for Death!) or to melt a policeman's gun without hurting his hand, (COMIC: The Lair of the Devil-Fish) or to melt iron bars. (COMIC: The Final Gripping Chapter!)
  • Flight: Nelvana was able to fly on shafts of the Northern Lights, and could proceed at the speed of light. (COMIC: Death Stalks the Arctic) The beams of light were more powerful than ocean water pouring through a newly-made hole in the hull of a submarine. (COMIC: The Dictator Strikes) She could also transport others alongside her. (COMIC: The Ice-Beam)
  • Dry Ice: Nelvana was able to turn her body into dry ice, causing pain to any who touched her. (COMIC: Death from Above)
  • Electrical Interference: Flying past an airplane with electronics that weren't shielded by plastics caused irreparable damage to engines, radios, and other metallic technology, by fusing the metallic parts. This left the Nazi planes red-hot on impact with the ground 10,000 feet below. (COMIC: The Battle of the Arctic)
  • Invisibility: By shrouding herself in the aura of a "super light ray", Nelvana could turn herself invisible. (COMIC: The Devil-Ship!)
  • Levitation: Nelvana was able to levitate on shafts of the Northern Lights. (COMIC: Death Stalks the Arctic)
  • Telepathy: Nelvana was able to telepathically communicate with Tanero by sending her thoughts through the Northern Lights. (COMIC: The Dictator Strikes)

Magical Artifacts[]

  • Magic Cloak: Throwing her cloak over her brother Tanero allowed him to change shape. (COMIC: Death Stalks the Arctic)

Weaknesses[]

Technological Weaknesses[]

  • Demagnetising Bracelets: The handcuffs placed onto Nelvana's wrists by Mardyth prevented her from using powers other than telepathy. (COMIC: The Dictator Strikes)

Notes[]

  • Nelvana was created by Adrian Dingle.[1]
  • Nelvana, in the guise of Alana North, is revealed to have joined with the Royal Canadian Mounted Police to carry out her work as a secret agent, and to consider herself Canadian, "The Ether People, Chapter 2".
