New York Maximum Security Penitentiary was an American penal colony of the 20th century, built from the remains of New York City. In 1988, in the face of skyrocketing crime levels, the island of Manhattan was written off by the United States government. Walls were erected on the other sides of the river and the remaining inhabitants left to fend for themselves, while captured criminals would be dumped into the city.
In 1997, while en route to the Hartford Summit, President John Harker was trapped inside the city after Air Force One was captured by terrorists. With the United States needing the contents of the President's briefcase to ensure that the peace summit could be a success, the United States Police Force dispatched captured criminal and ex-war hero Snake Plissken into the prison to recover the President. Subsequent events lead to the President's rescue and the death of the powerful crime lord known as the Duke of New York.
