Peter Minuit (c. 1580 – 5 August 1638) was a Walloon from Tournai. Minuit was involved in the colonisation efforts of the Netherlands and Sweden in North America, going on to found New Sweden. Minuit is credited with purchasing Manhattan Island which became the site of New Amsterdam, and later a borough of New York City. Minuit drowned during a hurricane in 1638.
