Prosper Gaffney, final words to Harvey Denton

Prosper Gaffney was a scientist affiliated with the British Army, who was present at the testing of nuclear weapons in Maralinga, South Australia. Horrified at the effects of the radiation on the Aboriginal Australian population, Gaffney became a hermit in the area, and remained in quiet silence for decades. After the commencement of the McClelland Royal Commission, Gaffney made contact with Melbourne ad man Harvey Denton, whose father had worked alongside Gaffney on the testing. The two of them hoped to bring the truth to the light of day.

Notes[]

Behind the Scenes[]

  • Gaffney was portrayed by English actor Donald Pleasence.[1][2]
  • Janet Maslin, writing for The New York Times, commended Pleasence's performance "as the extremely odd hermit who lives in a desert cave and who has waited many years for the Maralinga tragedy to come to light," as good.[3]
