Robert Walpole, 1st Earl of Orford KG PC (26 August 1676 – 18 March 1745) was an English politician historically regarded as being the first prime minister of Great Britain, in which he served from 1721 to 1742, and remains the longest-serving prime minister.
Resignations in the wake of the South Sea Bubble and Walpole's protection of colleagues implicated in corruption led to an advance in his political fortunes. Walpole was appointed to the position of First Lord of the Treasury in 1721, and it is upon that appointment that historians consider his tenure as de facto prime minister to have begun.
