Sir Percy Blakeney, Bart., K.C.B. was an English aristocrat and spymaster of the 18th century. During the French Revolution, Blakeney operated a clandestine secret society of English aristocrats dedicated to rescuing French aristocrats from the guillotine. As the Scarlet Pimpernel, Blakeney and the League of the Scarlet Pimpernel rescued many would-be-victims of the Reign of Terror, including the Dauphin.

- The Pimpernel was created by English author Baroness Orczy.[3] The character has been recognised as the prototypical archetype of a superhero, with Stan Lee stating the Pimpernel was "the first character who could be called a superhero."[4]
