Notes[]
Behind the Scenes[]
- Beck was played by American actor Morgan Freeman.[2][3] Freeman's casting was controversial at the time, due to widespread disbelief that an African American man could become president. Director Mimi Leder claimed that Barack Obama thanked her, attributing the film as a partial cause of his electoral success.[4]
Trivia[]
- Beck has been cited as one of the best fictional film presidents of all time.
- Maddie Davis, writing for Comic Book Resources, declared Beck to be one of the best movie presidents.[5]
- In a fan poll run by Looper, 37% of respondents selected Beck as the best film president, winning the poll and coming out ahead of Thomas J. Whitmore, James Dale, and Richard Blake.[6]
- Conversely, in the eyes of America Fun Fact of the Day, Beck was ranked 114 out of 142 fictional film presidents, ahead of John Harker but behind Robert Baker.[7] Their ranking was motivated by Beck's duplicitous actions in covering up the approach of the comet and averting any possibility of evacuating the United States' East Coast prior to its impact.
- Freeman's role in the film was recognised by real-life President Joe Biden in an interview conducted prior to the 2024 State of the Union Address.[8][9][10]
