Yasser Arafat (4 / 24 August 1929 - 11 November 2004) was an Egyptian-born Palestinian political figure. While a youth, Arafat embraced Arab nationalism and anti-Zionist ideas. He fought on the side of the Muslim Brotherhood during the 1948 Arab–Israeli War, in opposition to the establishment of Israel. He served as Chairman of the Palestinian Liberation Organization from 1969 until his death. During the 1970s, Arafat was accused and believed to have organised the Munich massacre and the 1973 Khartoum diplomatic assassinations. In 1988 he recognised Israel's right to exist. Over the following years, Arafat and succeeding Israeli prime ministers sought to devise a two-state solution. In 1994, Arafat received the Nobel Peace Prize, together with Yitzhak Rabin and Shimon Peres, for the negotiations in Oslo. In his waning days, Arafat's popularity with the people of Palestine declined as Hamas grew to prominence. Arafat died in 2004, with the cause of death being disputed; Swiss and French scientists asserted he could have been killed by polonium poisoning, while Russian scientists disagreed.
